Mutero is a small coffee estate in Kirinyaga County, around 100 kilometres north of Kenya’s capital Nairobi. The owner, Mr Alvan Mutero, established the estate sixty years ago with four-thousand trees. After an expansion in 2005, the land now boasts nine-thousand SL28 cultivar plants and is a testament to Alvan’s careful maintenance and passion for his craft. Alvan has installed a small factory with a depulping machine, several fermentation tanks and washing channels to process his own coffee. This allows him to sell his coffee directly, without being exposed to the fluctuations of the coffee auctions. Expect a fruit-forward coffee -think of rhubarb- with a complex acidity as well as nutty tones.
